VOLUNTEERING

Sometimes its mot possible to work doing what you love, but you are almost always guaranteed to be able to volunteer to do something that you love. Here are some places I am currently volunteering for, as well as those that I have had the honor of devoting my time to in the past. 

Archive Experience

 

Piedmont Blues Preservation Society, Greensboro, NC                                      

Executive Board member and Archivist (non-profit)

November 2017 - present 

 

  • Attending meetings regarding regular business, as well as specific committees relating to festivals and other           events

  • Attending and participating in events associated with the organization

  • Actively making decisions regarding the organization’s business, festivals, promotions, marketing, etc

  • Organizing and setting up an archive for the organization’s paper, photograph, and audiovisual materials 

 

 

Greensboro History Museum, Greensboro, NC                                        

Archives volunteer

June 2017 – February 2020, May 2024 - present 

 

  • Organizing manuscripts from two small legacy collections containing manuscripts  from the late 18th century       and on, writing finding aids for the collections and updating existing information, researching information and   people pertaining to the collections

  • Working on and refining the finding aid for the Maco Beauty School Collection, containing manuscripts as well as    photographs

  • Digitizing and writing metadata for photograph negatives in a large collection housed by the museum

  • Troubleshooting and digitizing audio reels as well as audiocassettes, writing brief abstracts about content

Volunteer
July 2015 – February 2016
  • Organizing and rehousing an unprocessed collection consisting of but not limited to scrapbooks, member yearbooks, annual reports, newsletters, pamphlets, official materials, correspondence, magazines, newspaper clippings.
  • Creating a finding aid in Archon on the library's website: 

         Business and Professional Women's Club of Greensboro Records

Internships

 

Cumulus Broadcasting           Wilmington, NC                                                                         

 March 2006 – July 2006

 

  • Learned about each of the 5 radio stations in the cluster – including demographic, advertisers, genre and playlists, types of events, and station managers and other staff

  • Conducted interviews with all of the department heads, including the news, promotion, sports, production, and     sales; as well as station managers and the general manager of the cluster

  • Composed and recording an ad for the station

  • Came up with original ideas for promotion for the various stations

  • Learned about promotions, sales, and production as applied to the cluster

  • Was present at various local events and represented the station, assisted DJs, and talked to listeners

  • Compiled all data received and experiences into a comprehensive packet

 

 

Cucalorus Film Festival          Wilmington, NC                                                              

December 2003 – March 2004

 

  • Watched and voted on submissions to the festival

  • Entered of submissions into the Cucalorus film database

  • Created and put together bags for filmmakers, and helped with the promotion of the festival

  • Worked festival shifts including set up, decoration, ticket booth, and ushering

  • Interacted with filmmakers, guests, actors, and other volunteers

  • Creation of a paper upon completion of internship, which was given to both Cucalorus and the Film Studies            department of UNCW
