Student Learning Outcome No. 8: Collaboration and Goals

Up until this semester, most of my collaboration regarding meeting my goals in Library and Information Studies has been limited to projects relating to my coursework, and has been largely academically based. Outside of LIS, however, as General Manager I took part in many collaborative efforts during the two years I worked at WUAG 103.1 FM. I helped organize at least two dozen shows and events, and worked with many local venues and community groups to make those events happen, as well as bands, local artists, venues, booking agents, and others that were involved. The station also had several shows in which we collaborated with other community groups and businesses, including the Coraddi, UNCG's art and literature magazine; Amplifier, a local music magazine; Hand to Hand, and Face to Face, Greensboro  community non-profits; and CFBG, a record co-op and venue space that remains part of the Greensboro music scene. The station also worked with other stations, including WQFS at Guilford College in Greensboro, WKNC in Raleigh, and WXDU in Durham. Learning how to effectively communicate with these groups and people, as well as create a network of people to call on in times of need (things can and do fall through, I learned very quickly) proved to be extremely valuable. One of the biggest feelings of accomplishment I have experienced at the station was planning a show and having it go off without a hitch. I am grateful that I still remain part of that community that I built in those two years, regardless of the fact that I am no longer at the station - and it only helps with my current goals in relation to my digitization project for WUAG to have those connections still in place.

Since this semester has started, I have had the opportunity to really concentrate on Library and Information Studies, and my role in the program as well as my role in the field. I mentioned before that up until this point I did not really have any practical experience in relation to libraries and archives - and looking back over this last semester, I really managed to throw myself into gaining that experience in a very tangible way. My practicum this semester at the Archive of Documentary Arts at the Rubenstein Library at Duke University has really opened my eyes to what it is to work in an archive - and I could not be happier with my choice to pursue hands on experience there. The people I have met since I have been there, as well as the work that I have put in have been pretty fantastic in every sense of the word. It was my supervisor, Craig Breaden, who convinced me to go to the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) Conference in early October, which turned out to be quite an exciting and eye opening experience for me, and allowed me to meet all sorts of people and exchange ideas - something that I had never been exposed to before. I look forward to continuing to work with people at Duke as well as make new connections at conferences, and am quite excited about where it all will take me.

My independent study has also allowed me to make connections and collaborate with people - the major ones being Sarah Dorsey and David Gwynn - both people working at Jackson Library on UNCG's campus that I had met in the past, whether through my courses or through the station. This project has given me the opportunity to strengthen those ties, and really collaborate with people in which to make something happen. The staff of WUAG is also part of this collaboration - especially since the project could not exist without them, and the General Manager as well as the Production Director are important players in the plan as it is at this point.  Since the plan is in its early stages, I have no doubt that details will become more and more fine tuned as I go forward, and am looking forward to working with new directors at the station as they come into their positions, as well as watching the project grow with those already involved.
