PROJECTS

University of North Carolina at Greensboro

WUAG Vinyl Digitization Project

For my independent study in my last semester, I worked on a plan to create a database of the vinyl holdings of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro's campus radio station, WUAG 103.1 FM. This project focuses on digitizing 7' EP records for airplay, as well as creating a catalog of all items available in the vinyl collection, and would eventually include making all the music in the collection available for airplay in a digital format.  The station contains an archive of roughly 8,000 items, most of them LPs, but with a sizable collection of at least 600 7' EPs - many of which are unavailable to listen to, purchase, or acquire in any way, except through airplay at the station. The reasons for this are varied - several bands are no longer together, the 7' are limited release, or they are from local musicians. These unique materials, like all of the music in WUAG's collection, include reviews and comments from DJs who have played these records at WUAG over the air through the years, and lend an interesting look at the history as well as musical environment at the time, giving insight to not only the workings of the station, but the history of that point in time for music as well as college stations and the North Carolina music scene.

This plan also includes collaboration between WUAG and the Music Library and Electronic Resources and Information Technology departments of Jackson Library at UNCG regarding making practicums available for LIS students through the library for those that are interested in sound archiving or librarianship. This would include providing an environment in which students could learn about sound recording, data entry, metadata, and information technology. The project also leaves room for LIS students interested in creating an independent study regarding creating a database to house the digitized music and make it available for airplay. These plans for possible practicums and independent study will be written in to the plan. The plan also leaves room for credit students of MST 190 and 490, WUAG's credit class, to work with vinyl within the production department of the station and earn hours for credit while helping the progress of digitization of the vinyl archives.

WUAG and Jackson Library will be given copies of the plan once it is completed, and I would be available for overseeing the project after gradation, continuing my involvement, which will include applying for grants for the station and this project in order to fund equipment, hardware, and other costs, as well as writing a paper regarding the whole process which I would then like to publish.

Since initially beginning planning the project, it has taken many different turns, and is reaching a place in which it is coming together to create a balanced framework which is not only practical but also beneficial to WUAG, Jackson Library, and the Library and Information Studies department itself. I am excited about remaining involved after leaving the program, and look forward to seeing this unfold, especially relating to my background as General Manager of the station.

William Chafe Oral History Collection

As part of my work as an audiovisual intern at the Duke Archive of Documentary Arts in the audiovisual department, I am working with various kinds of materials and making them available to patrons of Rubenstein Library. The William Henry Chafe Oral History collection is one which spans from 1933-1978, with most of the materials in the collection consisting of transcripts and recordings done in the 70s. The collection focuses on Civil Rights, predominantly events in the 1960s in Greensboro, North Carolina, and includes interviews from people who were involved in the movement, as well as those who opposed it.

Much of the collection has been digitized, but the whole of the collection itself is incomplete, and more work is in order to make it available through the Duke Archives.

I have done extensive work involving data entry and labeling of audio items in the collection, as well as repairing damaged items and creating a crosswalk which will be used in Archivist Toolkit, as well as a finding aid which will include all items to be available on the Archive of Documentary Arts website.

Other involvement with the collection:

  • Master inventory creation in Excel, including the processing and labeling of 84 master and use audio cassettes, 215 master and use audio CDs and data CDs containing interviews, and 70 folders containing interview notes, transcripts, articles, and other relevant materials

  • Research of content, listening to interviews to correct inaccuracies, fixing problems such as spelling, mislabeling, misdating, or other mistakes

  • Steady source creation in Excel and conversion into XML, with minor XML editing

  • Importing of XML steady source inventory into Archivists Toolkit, as well as imputing and editing information

  • Correction and re-creation of finding aid included on Duke Libraries website through Archivists Toolkit

  • Repair of broken and damaged audio cassettes

H. Lee Waters Film Collection

From 1936 to 1942, H. Lee Waters, a studio photographer based in North Carolina, took many films of life in North Carolina and Virginia towns, which he would then show in local movie theatres. He called these films 'Movies of Local People'. Duke University's Archive of Documentary Arts is currently working on making their collection of these films more available, and is doing so through digitizing these films and making them available online through OHMS (Oral History Metadata Synchronizer) as well as Youtube.

My involvement in the project and collection was transcribing interviews as well as creating shot lists for many of the films that Waters shot as well as checking existing shot lists for other films throughout North Carolina and Virginia. I also created a document regarding shot list description for documentary film which I hope will help standardize the process.

Other involvement with the collection:

  • Correction of transcripts of interviews with Tom Waters and Mary Waters Spaulding

  • Assistance in creating a time map for all locations and dates for films in the collection

  • Creation of a document stating the best practices, vocabulary, and standard terms for shot list creation of H. Lee Waters films

  • Shot list editing and creation of over 45 short films in the collection

Radio Haiti Archives

The Radio Haiti Collection is one that has been recently acquired at Duke, and includes thousands of hours of audio of Radio Haiti broadcasts, a radio station that operated in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The collection includes audio broadcasts in Creole and French from the early 1970s to the early 2000s – the time in which it was under the directorship and ownership of Jean Dominique and Michele Montas, journalists that were invested in the rights of their country through both Duvalier dictatorships. Behind the Veil: Documenting African-American Life in the Jim Crow South

The Behind the Veil: Documenting African-American Life in the Jim Crow South Records s are comprised chiefly of interviews recorded on cassette tapes. Over 1000 interviews in this collection cover many topics related to African-American life in the 20th century, with a focus on southern segregation. I worked mainly with audiocassettes and computer discs, as this was one of the collections I did not work extensively on during my time at Duke.

My involvement with the collection was as follows:

  • Creation of separate master inventories in Excel and labeling and processing both, including 156 audio cassettes, 595 floppy discs, 12 zip discs, and 1 CD, including interviews, symposiums, talks, and project files
